What is Long Line Trolling?
Longlining, a unique method of fishing, remains largely unknown among anglers despite its effectiveness. Unlike traditional trolling where rods are placed in rod holders with planer boards, divers, or lead core line to extend lure reach from the boat, longlining involves holding the rod by hand, with just the lure behind the boat. By manually controlling the lure's depth and movement, anglers "pump" the rod to create a surging motion, allowing the bait to intermittently flutter and pause as the boat moves slowly over underwater structure.
This technique offers a heightened sensory experience, enabling anglers to detect subtle movements such as bottom ticks, weed contact, and gentle nibbles. When a fish strikes, the angler immediately feels the bite, sets the hook, and engages in an adrenaline-fueled battle to reel in the catch. Longlining offers a more tactile and interactive fishing approach, paired with the thrill of detecting bites and the satisfaction of landing a big fish in the dark.
